Orpah's Forty Paces and the Four Giants of Gath

Midrash Shmuel 20:4

"And the Philistine drew near morning and evening" (1 Samuel 17:16). Rabbi Berekhiah bar Rabbi Yitzhak said: As a reward for the forty paces that Orpah walked with her mother-in-law, her son was held back forty days, as it is written, "And he presented himself forty days" (ibid.). Rabbi Yudan said in the name of Rabbi Yitzhak: As a reward for the four tears that Orpah shed over her mother-in-law, she merited that these four mighty men arose from her: Saph, Madon, Goliath, and Ishbi, as it is written, "these four" (2 Samuel 21:22). Rabbi Yitzhak said: On that night when Orpah separated from her mother-in-law, the bodies of a hundred men commingled with her, as it is written, "and as he spoke with them, behold, the champion... out of the ranks (mima'arkhot) of the Philistines" (1 Samuel 17:23) — "out of the ranks" is written "out of the caves (mima'arot)" — from the hundred foreskins of the Philistines. Rabbi Tanchuma said: Even one dog as well, and it is written, "And the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog?" (1 Samuel 17:43).
