The Hidden Cargo of Torah on a Doomed Trading Ship

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Terumah 1:3

Our masters told a story about a ship in which there were merchants, and there was there a certain haver (scholar). They said to him, "What is your merchandise?" He said to them, "It is hidden away." They said to him, "Why will you not show it to us?" He said to them, "When I enter the province, I will show it to you." They began to go over the ship, and they did not find it, and they began to laugh at him. They did this until tax collectors rose up against them and took everything that was in their hands, and they had nothing to eat and nothing to wear. That haver entered the synagogue; he began to sit and expound to them, and they began to honor him and to provide for him. Those who had been with him on the ship began to come to him and to make requests of him. They said to him, "We beg of you, since you know us, plead our cause." What caused him to be saved? The Torah that was in his heart. Thus: "For I have given you good instruction" (Proverbs 4:2).
