Why Jacob Invoked El Shaddai over His Afflictions

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Miketz 16:3

Another interpretation of "And may God Almighty (Shaddai)" (Genesis 43:14): Rabbi Aha said: These heavens were created from a curtain (doq), and the earth was created from snow, as it is said, "Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain" (Isaiah 40:22), and the earth from snow, as it is said, "For to the snow He says, 'Become earth'" (Job 37:6). When the Holy One, blessed be He, told them to be created, they kept stretching forth and going on. Rabbi Aha said: Had the Holy One, blessed be He, not said to them, "Enough (dai)," they would have kept stretching forth and going on until the dead would be revived. Jacob said: He who said to the heavens and the earth, "Enough (dai) for you," may He say to my afflictions, "Enough (dai) for you" — "And may God Almighty (Shaddai)."
