Why God Hid Moses Trumpets at the Hour of His Death

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Vayechi 3:1

[(Genesis 47:29:) And the days of Israel drew near to die.] This is what Scripture says (Ecclesiastes 8:8): "No man has authority over the wind to restrain the wind, and there is no authority over the day of death." Rabbi Joshua of Sikhnin said in the name of Rabbi Levi: As for the trumpets that Moses made in the wilderness (Numbers 10:1-10), when he drew near to death, the Holy One, blessed be He, hid them away, so that no man would blow upon them and have them come to him — to fulfill what is said (Ecclesiastes 8:8): "and there is no authority over the day of death."
