Holy in Every Kind of Holiness - Rabbi Simlai Answers the Heretics

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Kedoshim 4:1

[Another interpretation (of Leviticus 19:2): SPEAK UNTO ALL THE CONGREGATION OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL.] YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY. The Holy One, blessed be He, said to them: Be holy, just as I am holy in every matter. See what is written (Joshua 24:19): "For He is a holy God" (the word for "holy" being in the plural). What is the meaning of "For He is a holy God"? This verse is an opening for the heretics (minim), for He appears as if He were two powers. The heretics asked Rabbi Simlai: What is the meaning of "For He is a holy God"? Do you not say that He is one power? Behold, here are two powers! He said to them: Fools of the world! [See what is written: "For He is a holy God."] Had it said "For they are holy gods," you might say they are two powers. [And what is "a holy God"?] Rabbi Berekhyah said in the name of Rabbi Abba: What is the meaning of "He is holy" (in the plural)? That He is holy in every kind of holiness. How so? Rabbi Aha bar Hanina said: His speech is in holiness, as it is said (Psalms 60:8): "God has spoken in His holiness." His way is in holiness, as it is said (Psalms 77:14): "O God, Your way is in holiness." He is seen in holiness, as it is said (Psalms 63:3): "So have I beheld You in the sanctuary." His praise is in holiness, as it is said (Exodus 15:11): "Who is like You, glorious in holiness?" The baring of His arm is in holiness, as it is said (Isaiah 52:10): "The Lord has bared [His holy arm]." Thus, "He is holy" - that He is holy in every kind of holiness.
