The Red Heifer Paradox and the One Who Brings Pure from Impure

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Chukat 4:1

Another interpretation of (Numbers 19:2): "This is the statute of the Torah." This is what Scripture says (Job 14:4): "Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one [is it not the One?]." For example, Abraham from Terah, Hezekiah from Ahaz, Mordecai from Shimei, Israel from the nations of the world, [and the world to come from this world]. Who did so? And who commanded so? And who decreed so? Was it not One — was it not the Only One of the world? There we have learned [in a Mishnah]: [A bright spot the size of a bean is unclean; if it has spread over the whole of him, he is clean. Who did so? Who decreed so? Who commanded so? Was it not the Only One of the world? There we have learned:] The woman whose offspring died within her womb, and the midwife reached in her hand and touched it — the midwife is unclean with a seven-day uncleanness, but the woman is clean until the child comes out; [and so too] the dead person in the house — the house is clean; once that which defiles has gone out of it, [the house is unclean]. Who did this? Was it not the Only One of the world? There we have learned: All who are occupied with the [red] cow from beginning to end render their garments unclean, yet it itself makes the unclean clean. Rather, the Holy One, blessed be He, said: "A statute I have engraved for you, a decree I have decreed, and you are not permitted to transgress My decree."
