Search the Chambers of Your Heart When Suffering Comes

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Vayetzei 5:2

Another interpretation (of Isaiah 26:20): "Go, my people, enter into your chambers." Look into the chambers of your heart, and see that it was not according to your iniquities that I brought sufferings upon you, for "your chambers" are nothing but the chambers of the kidneys, as it is said, "searching all the chambers of the belly" (Proverbs 20:27). And if sufferings come upon you, do not open your mouth and cry out in protest against the attribute of justice, but rather "shut your doors behind you" (Isaiah 26:20). Why? "Hide for but a moment until the wrath passes" (Isaiah 26:20). Sufferings never come into the world except as ones that pass away, as it is said, "Hide for but a moment until the wrath passes."
