The Gazelle's Open Eye and the Watching Eye of the LORD

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Toldot 5:4

Another interpretation of "Behold, the eye of the LORD is toward those who fear Him" (Psalms 33:18): Because it says, "Flee, my beloved, and be like a gazelle" (Song of Songs 8:14). Just as this gazelle, when it sleeps, has one eye closed and one eye open, so too you — "and be like a gazelle." Therefore David said, "Behold, the eye of the LORD is toward those who fear Him" (Psalms 33:18).
