The Soul Knows Its Own Bitterness and Shuns the Stranger

Pesikta DeRav Kahana 12:9

"The heart knows the bitterness of its own soul, and a stranger does not share in its joy" (Proverbs 14:10). Rabbi Yonatan said: why does a person smell the odor of sulfur and his soul recoils from it? Because the soul knows that it is judged with it. And what is the reason? "He will rain down upon the wicked snares, fire and sulfur" (Psalms 11:6). Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman in the name of Rabbi Yonatan said: it is like the foul vapors that linger after the bathhouse. Another interpretation: "The heart knows the bitterness of its own soul" (Proverbs 14:10), these are Israel. "And a stranger does not share in its joy" (Proverbs 14:10), this is Jethro, "And Moses sent off his father-in-law, and he went to his own land" (Exodus 18:27). What is written after it? "In the third month" (Exodus 19:1).
