Hebron Given to Caleb and the City Named for Four

Yalkut Shimoni on Nach 23:4

"And they gave Hebron to Caleb." But Hebron was a city of refuge! Abaye said: only its outskirts [were given to him]. And so it says, "but the field of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession" (Joshua 21:12). "And the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba [the city of four]" (Joshua 14:15). Because four righteous men dwelt in it: Aner, Eshkol, Mamre, and Abraham. And because four righteous men were circumcised in it: Aner, Eshkol, Mamre, and Abraham. And because four matriarchs were buried in it: Eve, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah. And because four patriarchs were buried in it: Adam, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And on account of its master, who was four: Anak and his three sons. Rabbi Azariah said: from there Abraham went out and pursued the four kings, the world-rulers, which adds up to a confederation of four. First it went to Judah, and afterward to Caleb, and afterward to the priests, and afterward to the Levites; for it is one of four despised places in the Land of Israel. And which are they? Rabbi Yitzchak said: Dor and Naphath-dor and Timnath-serah and Hebron. And the Rabbis said: Danah and Kiriath-sannah and Timnath-serah and Hebron.
