Deborah Among the Prophetesses of Israel

"And Deborah, a prophetess" (Judges 4:4). Of Sarah it says, "the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah" (Genesis 11:29) [Iscah being Sarah, for she gazed (sokhah) with the holy spirit]. Of Miriam it says, "And Miriam the prophetess took" (Exodus 15:20). Of Deborah it says, "And Deborah, a prophetess" (Judges 4:4). Of Hannah it says, "And Hannah prayed" (I Samuel 2:1). Abigail prophesied to David, and so David said to her, "Blessed is your discernment and blessed are you" (I Samuel 25:33). Of Huldah it says, "And Hilkiah went... to Huldah the prophetess" (II Kings 22:14). Of Esther it says, "And Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, wrote" (Esther 9:29).
