The Well as the Sanhedrin and the Rows of Disciples

Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 123:6

Another interpretation: "And behold a well in the field" this is the Sanhedrin. "And behold, three flocks of sheep" these are the three rows of disciples of the sages who sit before them. "For out of that well they watered the flocks" for from there they would hear the law. "And the stone on the mouth of the well was great" this is the most distinguished member of the court, who refines the law. "And all the flocks were gathered there" these are the disciples outside the Land. "And they rolled the stone" for they would deliberate in the law back and forth until they established it on its true footing.
