Another interpretation: "And the people rested." Rabbi Joshua says: He said to them, "If you keep this Sabbath, the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to give you three good festivals: the festival of Nisan, the festival of Atzeret (Shavuot), and the festival of Tishrei." And when they heard this matter they accepted it upon themselves and rested, as it is said, "and the people rested." Rabbi Eleazar of Modi'in says: He said to them, "If you keep this Sabbath, the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to give you six good measures: the Land of Israel, the World to Come, etc." And when they heard it they accepted and rested, etc.
