First, the grain itself — full sacks, not rationed portions. Second, their own silver slipped quietly back into the sacks so they are carrying home what they came with. The paradox of the returned money

The returned silver will terrify them at their first lodging (Genesis 42:27-28) because they cannot imagine a benefactor; they can only imagine a trap. But Joseph's intention is clear: he has bought their grain with his own resources. Twenty-two years earlier, they had taken twenty pieces of silver for him (Genesis 37:28). Now he is paying for their food himself. The rabbinic tradition reads the returned money as quiet restitution — the economic symmetry of the original sale, reversed.
