The most famous call in the Hebrew Bible lands on Abram's ear as a single imperative in (Genesis 12:1): Go forth. Targum Pseudo-Jonathan slows the verse down and makes you feel each tear.
The Aramaic does not say simply leave. It names three departures in ascending intimacy. Go thou from thy land. Separate thyself from thy kindred. Go forth from the house of thy father. The Targumist understands that the Holy One is not asking Abram for one goodbye. He is asking for three.
The first separation is from territory — the land, the market, the language of the street. The second is from kin — the cousins, the shared meals, the people who share your jokes. The third is the hardest: the house of the father. The smell of the rooms you grew up in. The bed where your mother nursed you. The chair your father sat in when he ordered the household.
The Targum then ends the verse with the sentence that makes the whole call possible: into the land which I will show thee. Not a land He has shown. A land He will show. Abram must walk before he is told where he is walking.
This is the founding motion of Jewish faith. You leave three concentric circles of belonging, and the destination is revealed only in transit. Every covenant since has begun this way. The promise is not in the map. The promise is in the fact that someone is waiting to show you one, if you will only start.
