The rabbis once overruled God—and God laughed. According to Bava Metzia 59b, the incident began with an argument about an oven.
Rabbi Eliezer declared a certain oven ritually pure. Every other rabbi disagreed. Rabbi Eliezer provided every logical argument imaginable. The Sages rejected them all. So he turned to miracles.
"If the halakha is with me, let this carob tree prove it." The carob tree uprooted itself and flew a hundred cubits. The Sages said: "We do not accept proof from a carob tree." Rabbi Eliezer said: "If the halakha is with me, let the stream prove it." The stream reversed course. "We do not accept proof from a stream." He said: "Let the walls of the study hall prove it." The walls began to collapse—until Rabbi Yehoshua scolded them: "If scholars are arguing about law, what business is it of yours?" The walls stopped falling but did not straighten, out of respect for both rabbis. They lean to this day.
Finally, Rabbi Eliezer said: "Let Heaven prove it." A bat kol (בת קול), a divine voice, rang out: "Why do you argue with Rabbi Eliezer? The halakha follows him in every case."
Rabbi Yehoshua stood and quoted (Deuteronomy 30:12): "It is not in heaven." Rabbi Yirmeya explained: since the Torah was already given at Sinai, we no longer heed heavenly voices. The Torah itself says to follow the majority (Exodus 23:2). The majority disagreed with Rabbi Eliezer. Case closed.
Years later, Rabbi Natan encountered Elijah the prophet and asked: "What did God do at that moment?" Elijah answered: "He smiled and said: 'My children have triumphed over Me. My children have triumphed over Me.'"
The oven was declared impure. Rabbi Eliezer was excommunicated. It was the day, the Talmud records, when the Torah definitively left heaven and became the possession of human beings.
