Judah keeps building the case. He reminds the vizier of every step, every conversation, every refusal. The family could not return to Egypt without the youngest brother.
"We told him, We cannot go down if our youngest brother be not with us when we go down, for we shall not be able to see the man's face, unless our youngest brother be with us" (Genesis 44:26). Targum Pseudo-Jonathan preserves the insistence. Not once, not reluctantly, not for diplomacy — but as an absolute condition.
The sentence looks like a piece of family logistics. It is actually a piece of theology. In the world of the Hebrew Bible, you cannot encounter divine favor without everyone you are responsible for. Mi-belt'od achu'na ha-katan imana — without our youngest brother with us, we cannot see the man's face.
The sages extend this principle. Prayer in Judaism assumes a minyan, ten adults. Redemption in Judaism assumes the whole family of Israel, not a pruned remnant. Exodus will not begin until the Holy One redeems all twelve tribes together. The pattern begins here, in Judah's mouth. We do not go back to the viceroy — which is to say, we do not approach power, or blessing, or grain — without the youngest.
This is also the specific reversal of the brothers' old crime. Twenty-two years earlier, they went down into a town without Joseph. They left him in the pit and walked away. Now they are saying, out loud, on the record: we do not go anywhere without our brother. The teshuvah is written into their travel plans.
Judah has not yet delivered the final offer — that comes in the next breath. But the framing is already complete: one family, twelve brothers, no exceptions.
