Moses Flees Pharaoh and Sits by the Well of His Fathers

Midrash Aggadah, Exodus 2:15

"And Moses fled from Pharaoh" (Exodus 2:15). They brought Moses up to the platform, [and Pharaoh sought to kill him,] and the Holy One, blessed be He, made Pharaoh mute, and the officers deaf, and Moses fled from Pharaoh. And because of this, at the time that he said, "I am not a man of words" (Exodus 4:10), the Holy One, blessed be He, answered him, "Who placed a mouth in man, or who makes [him] mute" — and who made him mute? "or deaf, or seeing" (Exodus 4:11): Who made the officers deaf? Or who made you seeing, so that you fled from Pharaoh? Was it not I, the Lord? "And he sat by the well" (Exodus 2:15): He took hold of the place of his fathers. Three found their mates at the well: Isaac, Jacob, and Moses.
