Lot Lifts His Eyes Over the Jordan Plain in Midrash Aggadah

"And Lot lifted up his eyes" (Genesis 13:10) — just as it says, "And his master's wife lifted up her eyes etc." (Genesis 39:7). "And he saw all the plain of the Jordan" — and this is nothing but harlotry, just as it says, "For by means of a harlot a man is brought to a loaf of bread" (Proverbs 6:26). "That it was all well-watered" — for their wives were all fit to be made to drink like a sotah, as it is said, "and he shall make the woman drink" (Numbers 5:24). "Before the LORD destroyed" — as it is said, "for all flesh had corrupted its way" (Genesis 6:12). "Like the garden of the LORD" — referring to the trees. Another interpretation: "Like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt." And it does not say "like the land of Babylon" or "Assyria," because the Garden of Eden and Egypt are one and the same, for upon them comes neither dew nor rain; rather, from the river it rises and waters them and returns. Therefore it says, "like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt."
