The Temple Scroll Handed Down Standing from Moses to Solomon

Midrash Shmuel 15:3

"And now stand still, that I may reason with you" (I Samuel 12:7). Rabbi Yirmiyah in the name of Rabbi Shmuel bar Rav Yitzchak: The scroll of the Temple, which the Holy One, blessed be He, handed over to Moses while standing — this is what is written, "But as for you, stand here by Me" (Deuteronomy 5:28). Moses arose and handed it over to Joshua while standing — this is what is written, "Call Joshua, and present yourselves" (Deuteronomy 31:14). Joshua arose and handed it over to the elders while standing — this is what is written, "And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem… and they presented themselves before God" (Joshua 24:1). The elders arose and handed it over to the prophets while standing — this is what is written, "And now stand still" (I Samuel 12:7). The prophets arose and handed it over to David while standing, and for this there is no verse. David arose and handed it over to Solomon his son while standing: "But You, O LORD, be gracious unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them" (Psalms 41:11). "All this in writing" (I Chronicles 28:19) — this teaches that it was given as a tradition. "By His hand upon me He gave me understanding" (ibid.) — this teaches that it was given by the Holy Spirit. Rabbi Menachma in the name of Rabbi Mana: it was spoken by the Holy Spirit — "and the pattern of all that he had by the spirit with him."
