Goliath the Provoker and David's Lament Over His Own Son

Midrash Shmuel 20:2

"Behold, you have struck Edom, etc., [why should you provoke trouble, that you should fall], etc." (2 Chronicles 25:19). Rabbi Chanina said: From here, whoever provokes a quarrel falls, from the reasoning of the verse, "Behold, you have struck Edom, etc." "And there went out a champion, etc." (1 Samuel 17:4). "LORD, how many are my adversaries; many rise up against me" (Psalms 3:2). Had others coveted my kingship, it would be a distress to me; how much more so my son who covets my kingship. Had others committed adultery with my wives, it would be a distress to me; how much more so my son who commits adultery with my wives. Had others killed my sons, it would be a distress to me; how much more so my son who killed my sons. "LORD, how many are my adversaries, etc." "His height was six cubits and a span, and a helmet of bronze was upon his head, etc." (1 Samuel 17:5). Rabbi Chanina said: Goliath was clothed in sixty kintarin. [Rabbi Abba bar Kahana said: one hundred and twenty.] And they do not disagree: let the unstated be learned from the explicit—just as the explicit are sixty, so too the unstated are sixty.
