The Sign to Eli and the Sign to Moses as a Sure Word

Midrash Shmuel 8:5

"And this shall be the sign to you" (1 Samuel 2:34). Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman said: it is a sure matter that will come upon your two sons, upon Hophni and Phinehas, and so on. And you shall know it from "And I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest" (ibid., verse 35). And like it is: "And this shall be the sign to you, that I have sent you" (Exodus 3:12). Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman said: it is a sure matter that I have sent you, in your bringing forth the people out of Egypt (ibid.); from "in your bringing forth the people out of Egypt" you shall know "that you shall serve God upon this mountain" (ibid.). "And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in your house [shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread]" (1 Samuel 2:36) — this expression is nothing other than an expression of sustenance, as it says: "Put me, I pray, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread" (ibid.).
