Esau Sells the Birthright the Day Abraham Died

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Toldot 3:1

(Genesis 25:29:) Now Jacob had cooked <a stew>. Esau came in from the field and saw that Jacob's face was blackened with soot. He said to him: What are you doing? He said to him: Do you not know that our grandfather Abraham has died, and I am making cooked dishes? And he was going to provide the mourner's meal for him. Esau said: My beloved and my hated one have died as one — Abraham has died and Nimrod has died. So what is this birthright to me? And what was the dish? Lentils — for from ancient times they would bring lentils to the mourner, and lentils to the house of feasting. (Genesis 25:29:) And Esau came. They said: this wicked one committed three transgressions on that day. He stole, as it is written (Obadiah 5): If thieves came to you, if robbers of the night. And he violated a betrothed maiden, as it is said: from the field — and "field" is nothing but a maiden, as it is said (Deuteronomy 22:25): If in the field the man finds [the maiden]. And he killed a person, as it is said: and he was faint — and "faint" is nothing but killing, as it is said (Jeremiah 4:31): Woe is me now, for my soul is faint before killers.
