The High Priest Greatest in Five Things and David Anointed Tall

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Emor 6:1

[(Leviticus 21:1:) AND THE LORD SAID TO MOSES: SAY TO THE PRIESTS.] What is written after this matter (in verse 10)? AND THE PRIEST WHO IS GREATEST AMONG HIS BROTHERS. Why is his name called "great"? Because he is great in five things: in beauty, in strength, in wealth, in wisdom, and in years. In beauty, that he is fairer than his brothers. In strength, that he was mighty in strength. Come and see Aaron: when he waved the Levites—twenty-two thousand in one day—how did he wave them? He raised and brought near, lifted up and brought down. Thus he was great in strength. And in wealth, for if he were not wealthy, his brother priests would make him wealthy. There is a story about Pinhas the Stonecutter, whom they appointed High Priest. His brother priests went out and saw him hewing stones, and they would not leave him at it, but filled the quarry before him with golden dinars. [And whence] do we learn that if he has nothing, his brother priests magnify him? As it is said, AND THE PRIEST WHO IS GREATEST AMONG (lit. "from") HIS BROTHERS. And not the High Priest alone, but the king as well. And so you find with David: when he went to fight with Goliath the Philistine, Saul said to him, YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO GO AGAINST THIS PHILISTINE, etc. (I Samuel 17:33). David said to him, YOUR SERVANT WAS TENDING [HIS FATHER'S] FLOCK, etc. (verse 34), AND I WENT OUT AFTER IT AND STRUCK IT, etc. (verse 35), BOTH THE LION AND THE BEAR, etc. (verse 36). Saul said to him: And who told you that you are able to kill him? David answered him: Did my father teach me hunting?—THE LORD WHO DELIVERED ME FROM THE PAW OF THE LION, etc. (verse 37). Immediately, AND SAUL CLOTHED DAVID IN HIS GARMENTS, etc. (verse 38). And it is written of Saul, FROM HIS SHOULDERS AND UPWARD HE WAS TALLER THAN ALL THE PEOPLE (I Samuel 9:2). Once he had clothed him and saw that they fit him, immediately he cast a grudging eye upon him. When David saw that he had shamed Saul's face, he said to him, I CANNOT GO IN THESE, FOR I AM NOT PRACTICED IN THEM (I Samuel 17:39). From this you learn that even if a man is short, when he is appointed king he becomes tall—why? Because at the hour he was anointed with the anointing oil he was more exalted than his brothers. David said: Over the anointing oil with which I was anointed I rejoice, that I shall never depart from my glory, as it is said, THEREFORE MY HEART IS GLAD AND MY GLORY REJOICES; MY FLESH ALSO DWELLS IN SAFETY (Psalms 16:9).
