Why the Land of Israel Falls to You as an Inheritance

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Masei 7:2

"This is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance" (Numbers 34:2). What is the meaning of "to you"? To you it is fitting. A parable: like a king who had male and female slaves, and he would marry off his male slaves to (those of) another estate. The king arose and reflected in his mind. He said: The male slaves are mine, and the female slaves are mine; it is better that I marry off my male slaves to my own female slaves. So too the Holy One, blessed be He, said: The land is Mine, as it is said, "For the land is Mine" (Leviticus 25:23); and it says, "The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof" (Psalms 24:1). And Israel is Mine, as it is said, "For unto Me the children of Israel are servants" (Leviticus 25:55). It is better that I bequeath My land to My own servants, to My own people. Therefore it is said, "This is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance."
