How Sin Brings Poverty and the Selling of Field House and Self

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Behar 8:2

A person who sins — at the first, what does the Holy One, blessed be He, do to him? He brings poverty upon him, and he sells his field, as it is said, "And if your brother becomes poor and sells some of his holding" (Leviticus 25:25). If he repents, then it is well; but if not, he sells his house, as it is said, "And if a man sells a dwelling house" (Leviticus 25:29). If he repents, then it is well; but if not, he sells his daughter, as it is said, "And if a man sells his daughter as a maidservant" (Exodus 21:7). If he repents, then it is well; but if not, he sells himself, as it is said, "If your brother, a Hebrew, is sold to you" (Deuteronomy 15:12). Why all this? Because he became poor through his iniquities, "When your brother becomes poor."
