Israel Adorned in the Merit of the Patriarchs

Pesikta DeRav Kahana 22:4

This is like an orphan girl who grew up in a palace. When her time came to be married, they say to her: Do you have anything? She says to them: I have something from my father, I have something from my grandfather. So Israel has merit from Abraham, and they have merit from our father Jacob. "For He has clothed me with garments of salvation" (Isaiah 61:10) -- in the merit of our father Jacob, "and she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands" (Genesis 27:16). "He has covered me with a robe of righteousness" (Isaiah ibid.) -- this is our father Abraham, "for I have known him" (Genesis 18:19). "As a bridegroom puts on a priestly diadem" (Isaiah ibid.) -- you find that when Israel stood at Mount Sinai, they contracted themselves like a bride, opening one hand and closing one hand.
