Rabban Gamliel says: Whoever has not said these three things on Passover has not fulfilled his obligation, and these are they: Pesach, Matzah, and Maror. The Pesach offering, on account of what? On account of the fact that the Holy One, blessed be He, passed over the houses of our fathers in Egypt, as it is said, "And you shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Passover," and so forth (Exodus 12:27). This bitter herb, Maror, on account of what? On account of the fact that the Egyptians embittered the lives of our fathers in Egypt, as it is said, "And they made their lives bitter with hard labor," and so forth (Exodus 1:14). This Matzah, on account of what? On account of the fact that they were redeemed, as it is said, "And they baked the dough," and so forth (Exodus 12:39). Rabbi Yose the Galilean says: Israel was fit for destruction in Egypt until the last one finished his Passover offering, as it is said, "And you shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Passover," and so forth. This teaches you that anyone who sees and hears the miracles that the Holy One, blessed be He, performed for Israel must give praise and thanksgiving, as it is said, "And Moses recounted to his father-in-law," "And Jethro rejoiced," "And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD" (Exodus 18:8-10).
