"You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened bread" (Exodus 23:18): you shall not slaughter the Passover offering while leaven still exists, the words of Rabbi Yishmael. I have only the slaughtering; from where do I include the sprinkling of the blood? Scripture says "the blood of My sacrifice." Rabbi Yehudah says: "My sacrifice" means the sacrifice that is wholly Mine, and which is that? This is the daily burnt offering. "Nor shall the fat of My feast offering remain until the morning" (Exodus 23:18): Scripture comes to teach concerning the fats, that they become disqualified by being left overnight upon the floor [of the Temple court, off the altar]. And I have merited to reason regarding the limbs: since the fats are a gift to the altar fires and the limbs are a gift to the altar fires, if you have learned concerning the fats that they are disqualified by being left overnight upon the floor, so too the limbs are disqualified upon the floor. Could it be that the limbs are also disqualified by being left overnight upon the arrangement of wood on the altar? Scripture says "all night until the morning" upon the arrangement; thus you have learned concerning the limbs that they are not disqualified by being left overnight upon the arrangement. And I have merited to reason regarding the fats: since the fats are a gift to the altar fires and the limbs are a gift to the altar fires, if you have learned concerning the limbs that they are not disqualified upon the arrangement, so too the fats should not be disqualified by being left overnight upon the arrangement. Thus what does Scripture teach by "nor shall the fat of My feast offering remain"? For the matter we have stated.
Do Not Slaughter the Passover While Leaven Still Remains
