"And Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD commanded" (Exodus 38:22). It is not written here "that Moses commanded," but "that the LORD commanded" — even things he had not heard from his teacher, his mind agreed to as had been said to Moses at Sinai. Rabbi Yochanan in the name of Rabbi Benayahu cited, "As the LORD commanded Moses His servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses" (Joshua 11:15). It is not written here "all that Moses commanded," but "that the LORD commanded Moses" — even things he had not heard from his teacher. Rabbi Huna said: "the Torah of truth was in his mouth" (Malachi 2:6) — these are the things he heard from his teacher; "and no injustice was found on his lips" (Malachi 2:6) — these are the things he had not heard from his teacher. And the rabbis said: "for the LORD will be your confidence" (Proverbs 3:26) — these are the things in which you are unschooled [a play on kislekha, your confidence, as kesel, folly]; "and will keep your foot from being caught" (Proverbs 3:26) — Rabbi Dosa said: from erroneous ruling; Rabbi Levi said: from harmful spirits. Rabbi Abba said: from here, if you have given charity from your purse, the Holy One, blessed be He, guards you from harmful spirits, from fevers, from the poll-tax, and from the land-tax. There was an incident with Rabbi Yeshevav, who arose and distributed all his property to the poor, and Rabban Gamliel sent to him: Did they not say at Usha that one gives a fifth of his property to the poor? And Rabban Gamliel — was he not before Usha? Rabbi Yose bar Bon in the name of Rabbi Levi said: such was the law in their hands and they forgot it, and the later ones arose and agreed with the opinion of the first ones, to teach you that any matter upon which a court devotes its very soul will in the end be upheld, as had been said to Moses at Sinai. And it accords with what Rabbi Mana said on "for it is no empty thing" (Deuteronomy 32:47): and if it is empty, it is empty "from you" (Deuteronomy 32:47); why? because you do not labor in it. "For it is your life" (Deuteronomy 32:47) — at the time when you labor in it.
