How the Bird Burnt-Offering Is Pinched and Burned

Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 474:7

"And the second he shall offer as a burnt-offering according to the ordinance" (Leviticus 5:10): according to the ordinance of the animal sin-offering. Or is it only according to the ordinance of the bird sin-offering? When it says "and he shall offer it" (Leviticus 1:15), Scripture distinguished between the bird sin-offering and the bird burnt-offering. How then do I uphold "according to the ordinance"? It means according to the ordinance of the animal sin-offering: just as the animal sin-offering comes only from unconsecrated property, and by day, and with his right hand, so too the bird burnt-offering comes only from unconsecrated property, and by day, and with his right hand. If so, just as there [with the animal] the slaughter is at the majority of the two organs, so too here at the majority of the two organs? Scripture states, "and he shall pinch and burn" (Leviticus 1:15, 17): just as the burning has the head by itself and the body by itself, so too the pinching has the head by itself and the body by itself. Rabbi Ishmael says: "according to the ordinance of the bird sin-offering"—just as the bird sin-offering is from the back of the neck, so too the bird burnt-offering is from the back of the neck. If so, just as there he pinches and does not sever at one organ, so too here he pinches and does not sever at one organ? Scripture states, "and he shall offer it." Rabbi Elazar son of Rabbi Shimon says: "according to the ordinance of the bird sin-offering"—just as there he holds the head and the body and sprinkles, so too here he holds the head and the body and sprinkles. What is he saying? This is what he is saying: just as there, when he holds the head with the body he sprinkles, so too here, and so on. If so, just as there with one organ, so too here with one organ? Scripture states, "and he shall offer it." And the first teacher: since we derive it from "and he shall pinch and burn," why do I need "and he shall offer it"? If not for "and he shall offer it," I would have said: what is "according to the ordinance"? According to the ordinance of the bird sin-offering. And if it were because of "and he shall pinch and burn," I would have said: just as the burning is at the top of the altar, so too the pinching is at the top of the altar. Now that "and he shall offer it" is written regarding it, expound this as well.
