The Line Taught the Soul Where to Travel
Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah links pathways of light, the Kav, prophecy of Eyn Sof, and the seventh millennium into a myth of repair.

Most people imagine the soul dropped into a blank world, told to find its way. Ramchal saw the opposite. The world is already a map of routes, and the soul was sent down a specific one for reasons older than its arrival.
In his Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, written in the 1730s as a structured survey of Lurianic Kabbalah, Moshe Chaim Luzzatto picks up the language Isaac Luria left behind in Safed (1534-1572). After the contraction of divine light, a single beam called the Kav, the Line, descends into the empty space and meets the Reshimu, the Residue of what was withdrawn. That meeting is where every soul begins.
Why does entry decide everything?
In Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah 34:4, Ramchal describes the structure of reality as a system of passages. Light does not flood every direction at once. It moves along chosen routes, and those routes correspond to the four-letter Name and to the way the lights inside connect to one another.
Then comes the line that turns the diagram into a story. The route the spirit travels is such that the place it first touches is the place it emerges. Entry sets exit. Where a soul makes contact decides where it will surface in the world.
Imagine the cosmos as stained glass and the Line as light pressing through it. The pattern was set long before the sun rose. The soul does not invent its route. It receives one, and the first pane it strikes is the room it will light.
The Kav enters the wreckage
That route would be a curiosity if it stopped at geometry. Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah 41:8 makes it personal. The Kav is named the root of the soul's mission, the single Line that carries the unity of God into territory where unity looks broken.
That territory is the Reshimu, the trace left after the Tzimtzum, the residue of an apparent withdrawal. It is where things look separate from their source, where evil seems to have its own footing, where a person can stand and honestly say the world is shattered.
The Line does not erase that place. It rules it. It enters the wreckage and refuses to call it meaningless. Ramchal's claim should land hard: the broken part of reality is not an embarrassment to be cleared away. It is the material through which oneness will finally be shown. The soul receives its mission from the Kav because the Kav goes in.
Eyn Sof saw the repair before it began
Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah 41:10 takes that mission and lifts it into prophecy. The repair of the Residue by the Line, Ramchal writes, was envisioned in the Supreme Will of the Eyn Sof (אין סוף), the Infinite, from the beginning. Perfection is not improvised after the damage. It is the original intention that the Line is gradually disclosing.
To explain, Ramchal reaches for the body. Light reaches the soul through flesh. At first the body blocks and distorts. After purification, the body becomes transparent and the same light pours through unhindered. The Kav is to the Residue what the soul is to the body. The Residue does not vanish. It becomes secondary, refined, no longer in the way.
The deficiencies that had loomed so large turn out to be small details the Infinite permitted, so that creation could feel the joy of seeing what their absence would have cost. Even the power of evil, in this reading, exists to make the rescue legible.
The Akudim hiding inside the Nekudim
The arc of time appears in Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah 49:40, and it lines up with the same drama. The 7 millennia of Jewish reckoning are not a calendar. Ramchal reads them as cosmology. The first 6 belong to Nekudim, the world of scattered points, where vessels broke and light fell out of formation. The seventh belongs to Akudim, the world of bound lights, where the same energies hold inside a single vessel without shattering.
Here is the move that should stop the reader. Akudim came first. The world of bound unity is older than the world of broken points. Inside that earlier unity, the vessel for everything that would later scatter was already prepared. The seventh millennium is not a new invention. It is the original order, finally allowed to surface.
Six thousand years of points waiting to be bound. One thousand years of binding. The labor was rehearsal for the line that had been there all along.
What does the soul carry through?
Put the four passages together and a single myth emerges. The structure of reality runs on chosen passages. The Kav enters those passages carrying unity into the Residue. The Infinite has been picturing the repair from the start. The seventh millennium reveals an Akudim that was already there, hiding behind the scattered points.
This is not abstract architecture. The Kabbalah Ramchal inherited from Luria does not ask the soul to escape the world. It asks the soul to recognize that the family it landed in, the wound it carries, the work it cannot put down, is the exact pane the Line meant to light through. A soul does not need to repair everything. It needs to repair its segment of the route. The Kav does the rest.
The route was already a promise
Ramchal's wager is severe and consoling at once. Distance from God is not the disproof of God. It is the medium through which oneness will be shown. The Residue is not the enemy of the Line. It is the page the Line is writing on. The scattered points of the first six millennia are Akudim taking the long way home.
The soul that wonders why it emerged here, in this body, in this century, in this argument, is asking the right question. Ramchal's answer is that the place of emergence is never accidental, and the same Line which chose the entry is already pulling the exit toward unity. The map was drawn first; the traveler catches up.
