Why Sarah Laughed Within Herself at the Promise of a Child

Midrash Aggadah, Genesis 18:12

"And Sarah laughed within herself" (Genesis 18:12) — at the words of the Omnipresent. Another interpretation of "within herself" (be-kirbah): within her innards (be-karbeha), both in old age and in days. "After I am worn out I have had renewal" — after the flesh has ripened and the wrinkles have been smoothed out and the flesh has been made delicate again. Another interpretation of "renewal" (ednah): the rejuvenation of the flesh and conception. "And my lord is old" — this is Abraham. She represented herself as fit to bear a child, and she represented her husband as old, not fit to beget.
