Why Eliezer Asked Rebecca's Lineage Before Giving the Jewelry

Midrash Aggadah, Genesis 24:47

"And I asked her" (Genesis 24:47). From here we learn that a person must inquire after the brothers of the bride and after her relatives. Another interpretation of "And I asked her, etc.": He did not tell them that he had given her the nose-ring and the bracelets before he asked her, for if he had said so they would have said: "How could you have known whether she was of the family of Abraham? And had she been a mamzeret (one of illegitimate birth) or a maidservant, you would have taken her for Isaac!"
