Why God Permitted Moses Alone to Separate From His Wife

Midrash Aggadah, Numbers 12:7

"Not so My servant Moses" (Numbers 12:7) — this is the house of Israel. In My name he commands, and he is faithful, for he neither diminishes from My words nor adds to them. And as for his separating from his wife, he did not do it of his own opinion, but by My command. This is what is written: "Mouth to mouth I speak with him" (verse 8) — that he should separate from his wife; and he, like a faithful one of the household, acted and separated. And from where do we know that the Holy One, blessed be He, told him [to do so]? As it is said: "Go say to them, Return to your tents" (Deuteronomy 5:27) — that is, to your wives — because He had commanded you, "Do not approach a woman" (Exodus 19:15). He went back and permitted them, but to Moses He did not permit it, for so He said to him: "But you, stand here with Me" (Deuteronomy 5:28).
