"And it shall be that the man whom He chooses" (Numbers 16:7). Thus said Moses to them: Know that the very man whom the Holy One, blessed be He, will choose — he is the holy one, for he alone shall be saved and all the rest shall die. Take heed, and do not bring evil upon yourselves. But they did not believe his words, and they were burned. Therefore it is said, "the firepans of these sinners against their own lives" (Numbers 17:3) — this teaches that they sinned against their own lives, for thus he had said to them that not one of them would be saved; only the one whom the Holy One, blessed be He, helps — he alone shall be saved.
