Saul's Slaughtering Knife and the Sword Found on the Day of Battle

Midrash Shmuel 17:2

"And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, etc. [and slay them here (ba-zeh)]" (1 Samuel 14:34). What is "and slay them here (ba-zeh)"? The Rabbis say: he showed them the knife [how long the measure of its length must be — for whence is it known? From "ba-zeh": bet (ב) is two, zayin (ז) is seven, he (ה) is five — behold, fourteen fingerbreadths]. He said to them: in this manner you shall slaughter and eat. When did the Holy One, blessed be He, repay him? On the day of the war with the Philistines. This is what is written: "And it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found, etc.; but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found" (1 Samuel 13:22). It says "was not found," yet you say "was found" — who provided it for him? Rabbi Yudan bar Rabbi Yitzchak said: the angel provided it for him. [And the Rabbis say: the Holy One, blessed be He, provided it for him.] (What is written after it?) It is written: "And Saul built an altar unto the LORD; the same was the first altar that he began to build unto the LORD" (ibid., ibid. 35). But how many altars did the early ones build? "And Noah built an altar" (Genesis 8:20); "And Moses built an altar" (Exodus 24:4); [and Saul built an altar] — yet you say "the same did he begin"! The Rabbis say: "the same did he begin" with respect to kings. Rabbi Yudan said: because he gave his life for the matter, Scripture accounted it to him as though he had begun to build an altar unto the LORD.
