Joseph Resists Potiphar's Wife as Hannah's Prayer Foretold

Midrash Shmuel 5:16

"He guards the feet of His faithful ones" (1 Samuel 2:9) — it is written His faithful one (in the singular). Another interpretation: "He guards the feet of His faithful ones" — this is Joseph. "And the wicked are silenced in darkness" — this is the wife of Potiphar. "For not by strength shall a man prevail" — as we have learned: Who is mighty? One who conquers his impulse. "But his bow abode in firmness" — Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman said: the bow was drawn taut and returned, as it is written, "But his bow abode in firmness, and the arms of his hands were made supple" (Genesis 49:24). Rabbi Yitzchak said: his seed was scattered and went out by way of his fingernails. "From the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob" — Rabbi Huna in the name of Rabbi Mattena: he saw the icon of his father and his blood cooled. Rabbi Menachma in the name of Rabbi Avin: he saw the icon of his mother and his blood cooled. "From there, the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel."
