The Wise Inherit Honor While Fools Carry Disgrace

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Tzav 12:1

[(Leviticus 8:2:) Take Aaron and his sons.] It is written (in Proverbs 3:35): "The wise shall inherit honor, [but fools carry away disgrace]." This verse serves in the creation of the world. "The wise shall inherit honor" — this is Noah and his sons. "But fools carry away disgrace" — this is the generation of the flood. This is also the case: "The wise shall inherit honor" — this is Shem, as it is said (in Genesis 9:26): "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem." "But fools carry away disgrace" — this is Ham, as it is said (there, in the same passage, verse 25): "And he said: Cursed be Canaan."
