Why Abraham Plated His Disciples in Silver and Gold for War

[AND HE ARMED HIS TRAINED MEN], (Gen. 14:14). What is the meaning of "and he armed his trained men"? That he took silver and gold and overlaid them with it. He said to them: You know that we are going out to war, and that we are going in order to save lives. Do not set your eyes upon wealth. If it is for the sake of silver and gold, behold, it is before you, as it is said, "And he armed his trained men." "And he armed" (vayareq) means nothing other than that he overlaid them with silver and gold, as it is said, "The wings of a dove covered with silver, and her pinions with the yellow (yeraqraq) of gold" (Ps. 68:14).
