Another interpretation of "And Jacob went out" (Genesis 28:10). This is what Scripture says: "When you walk, it shall lead you" (Proverbs 6:22). This is Jacob, who was occupied with Torah when he went out from his father's house, and he did not abandon it. "When you lie down, it shall watch over you" (ibid.) — when? "And he took from the stones of the place [and set them under his head and lay down in that place]" (Genesis 28:11). And he was lying down, and it was guarding him. "And when you awake, it shall speak with you" (Proverbs 6:22) — "And Jacob awoke from his sleep" (Genesis 28:16).
Jacob Guarded by Torah as He Flees Beersheba
Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Vayetzei 2:1
