The Ladder Dream and the Deaths of the Righteous and the Wicked

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Vayetzei 6:1

"And he dreamed, and behold a ladder, etc." (Genesis 28:12). Let our master teach us: What is the difference between the death of the righteous and the death of the wicked? Rabbi Yusta bar Shunem said in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua of Sikhnin: The death of the wicked is neither on the earth nor in the heavens, for thus it is written concerning Ahithophel, "And he gave instruction to his household and strangled himself" (II Samuel 17:23); and likewise Haman, neither on the earth nor in the heavens, as it is said, "And they hanged Haman" (Esther 7:10); and likewise his sons, "And they hanged him and his sons" (Esther 9:25). But the death of the righteous is in the heavens and on the earth, as it is said, "And the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living" (I Samuel 25:29). And on the earth, from where? "And they brought him up and buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the house of David, and they did him honor at his death" (II Chronicles 32:33).
