Why the Daughters of Zelophehad Brought Honor to Joseph

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Pinchas 8:1

Another interpretation of (Numbers 27:1): "Then the daughters of Zelophehad drew near," etc. It was an honor to them, an honor to their father, an honor to Machir, and an honor to Joseph, for from him issued righteous and wise women. And what was their wisdom? They spoke according to the moment, for Moses was occupied with the portion concerning inheritances, (Numbers 26:53): "To these shall the land be apportioned." They said to him: If we are reckoned as a son, let us inherit; and if not, let our mother be taken in levirate marriage. Immediately (Numbers 27:5): "And Moses brought their cause before the LORD." They were righteous, in that they had not been married. And why did they present themselves before Moses? So that he would not regard himself highly for having separated from woman forty years. The Holy One, blessed be He, made it known to him through these, as if to say: Behold, women who were not commanded sat forty years until they were married to one who was fitting for them.
