When cornered, honest people speak plainly. The brothers corner themselves at the door of Joseph's house. Before anyone accuses them, they accuse the evidence.
"It was when we had come to our place of lodging," they tell the steward, "that we opened our sacks, and, behold, the money of a man was in the mouth of his sack: but we have brought it back in our hand" (Genesis 43:21). Targum Pseudo-Jonathan preserves the brothers' tone precisely — a controlled panic, a voluntary confession, a proof held up in the palm.
They do not wait to be searched. They do not hide the silver. They hand it over before a single question is asked. This is hoda'at ba'al din, the legal concept of admission by a party: you gain credibility by admitting what would damage you. The brothers know they look guilty. Their only defense is to stop looking like defendants.
The midrash on this verse marvels at the reversal. These same men once lied to Jacob with a bloodstained coat, saying, know now whether it be thy son's coat or no. Now they stand before a stranger and hold up silver they could have kept, saying, we have brought it back. The ones who once concealed the truth about Joseph are now scrupulously transparent about coins.
The steward's answer — we will hear next — is shocking. But the brothers' move is the real lesson. Repentance begins in small rehearsals. Returning a bag of silver is practice for returning a brother. The sages note that teshuvah is built from such rehearsals: tiny honesties that, over years, remake the person who performs them.
