The Sabbath Angels

Shabbat 119b

Rava said, and some say it was Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi: Even an individual who prays on the eve of the Sabbath must recite "And they were finished" (Genesis 2:1-3), for Rav Hamnuna said: Whoever prays on the eve of the Sabbath and recites "And they were finished," the verse credits him as though he became a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation. Rav Chisda said in the name of Mar Ukva: Whoever prays on the eve of the Sabbath and recites "And they were finished," the two ministering angels who accompany a person place their hands upon his head and say to him: "Your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned" (Isaiah 6:7). It was taught in a baraita: Rabbi Yosei bar Yehudah says: Two ministering angels accompany a person on the eve of the Sabbath from the synagogue to his home, one good and one evil. And when he comes to his home and finds a lamp lit, the table set, and his bed made, the good angel says: "May it be His will that it be so for another Sabbath," and the evil angel answers "Amen" against his will. But if not, the evil angel says: "May it be His will that it be so for another Sabbath," and the good angel answers "Amen" against his will.
