The sixth heaven of Sefer HaRazim is a realm of crystalline purity where the angels exist in a state of perpetual holiness. After the escalating intensity of the lower heavens—from weather to punishment to fire to the sun's chariot to divine wrath—the sixth heaven offers something unexpected: stillness. The angels here do not manage the physical world. They guard wisdom itself.
The text describes the sixth heaven as made of pure water—not physical water but a transparent, luminous substance that reflects the glory of God's throne above it. The angels stand ankle-deep in this celestial water, their bodies reflecting its light so that they appear to be made of crystal. They speak only in whispers, and their whispers constitute the deepest secrets of the Torah—interpretations and meanings that even the great scholars on earth have never reached.
These angels are the Malachei HaDaat (מלאכי הדעת), the Angels of Knowledge. Their function is to preserve and transmit the divine wisdom that was present at creation—the Chokhma (חכמה) that Proverbs personifies as being present beside God "before the world was made" (Proverbs 8:22-30). They hold the knowledge of the Torah's hidden meanings, the mysteries of the prophetic visions, and the secrets of the world to come.
The adjurations of the sixth heaven promise not power or protection but understanding. The practitioner who successfully reaches this level is granted the ability to comprehend the innermost layers of Torah, to see the connections between apparently unrelated passages, and to understand why God created the world the way He did. This is the knowledge that the Talmud calls sitrei Torah (סתרי תורה), the secrets of Torah, which may be transmitted only to those who meet stringent requirements of character and learning (Chagigah 13a).
The sixth heaven also serves as a preparation chamber for the seventh. No soul or practitioner can enter the seventh heaven—the throne room of God—without first being purified in the crystalline waters of the sixth. The purity angels here function as a final checkpoint, washing away any remaining impurity before the ascent to the highest realm.
