"O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in crimson, with delights, who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel" (II Samuel 1:24). Rabbi Yehudah and Rabbi Nechemiah [differ]. Rabbi Yehudah says: the daughters of Israel certainly wept over Saul, for at the time that their husbands went out to war, he would feed them and provide for them and clothe them in crimson with delights. From here [we learn] that ornaments are becoming only upon a delicate body. Rabbi Nechemiah says: "the daughters of Israel" — these are the comely ones of Israel, namely the Sanhedrins of Israel; "weep over Saul" — for at the time that he would hear a point of halakhah issuing from the mouth of the disciples of the sages, he would stand and kiss him upon his mouth.

בנות ישראל (על) [אל] שאול בכינה המלבישכם שני עם עדנים המעלה עדי זהב על לבושכן (שמואל ב' א' כ"ד), רבי יהודה ורבי נחמיה, רבי יהודה אומר בנות ישראל ודאי על שאול בכינה, שבשעה שהיו בעליהן יוצאין למלחמה היה זנן ומפרנסן ומלבישן שני עם עדנים, מכאן אין תכשיטין נאים אלא לגוף מעודן, רבי נחמיה אומר בנות ישראל הנאות שבישראל, אלו סנהדריות של ישראל, (על) [אל] שאול בכינה, שבשעה שהיה שומע טעם הלכה יוצאה מפי תלמידי חכמים, היה עומד ונושקו על פיו.
