The Reviving Herb and the Ungrateful Lion at the Ladder of Tyre

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Chukat 1:4

There is a story about a certain man who was going from the Land of Israel to Babylonia. While he was eating, he saw two birds quarreling with one another. One of them killed its fellow. Then it went and brought an herb, [placed it upon its mouth,] and revived it. That man went and took the very herb that had fallen from the bird, and went to revive the dead with it. When he reached the Ladder of Tyre, he found a dead lion cast there. He placed the herb upon its mouth and revived it. The lion rose up and ate him. The proverb says: "Do good to the wicked, and evil will not reach you."
