The Cloud Gave Light to Israel Alone at the Sea

The darkness over Egypt was not total. It let them watch. All night they saw Israel eating in a light they could not walk into.

An Egyptian driver at the sea could not see his own hands.

The pillar had come down between the two camps and split its weather along a line. On one side, cloud. On the other, dark. Israel stood in light. Egypt stood in the same blackness that had sat on their country once for three days, the kind where a man does not see the man beside him and nobody gets up off the floor.

The Dark That Let Them Watch

The dark did not blind them all the way, and that was the cruelty in it. A man wrapped in that darkness could still see the people standing in the light.

So the Egyptians watched. They watched Israel eating. They watched them drinking. They watched a whole nation being fed and laughing about it, close enough to hear the noise, while the night sat on Egyptian eyes and would not lift off.

Israel alone had the light. Nobody in that army could walk into it.

Arrows Into a Shield

So they shot at it.

Arrows went up out of the dark and into the brightness, and stones after them, and whatever else a trapped army can throw. Nothing landed. The cloud took them and the angel took them, and the shafts died somewhere in the space between the camps while the meal went on.

My shield, the horn of my salvation, my fortress and my refuge. A shield to everyone who shelters in Him. The wall that night was weather with a preference, and something standing behind the weather that treated incoming arrows as a matter already settled.

The Morning Watch

At the morning watch the Lord looked toward the camp of Egypt out of the pillar of fire and cloud.

Morning is when this sort of thing happens. Jacob rose early after the stone and the ladder. Moses rose early and carried the tablets up. Joshua rose early and moved the whole camp from Shittim to the river. Samuel rose early to go and meet Saul. In the world to come the mercies are new every morning, and the wicked are cut out of the city in the mornings, and Jerusalem's judgment will be brought into the light every morning while the churl still does not know enough to be ashamed.

Dawn came to the sea and it was not neutral. Fire and cloud stopped being shelter and turned into a look.

He Walked in Front of Them

The display had an audience past the two camps.

God went in front of this people where the nations of the world could watch Him do it, so that they would learn to handle Israel with some honor. The nations did not learn. They killed them instead, with every kind of strange death, no two of them alike, inventing methods the way a workshop invents tools.

There is a valley set aside for that account. I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the valley of Yehoshafat and contend with them there. Not over idolatry. Not over bloodshed in general. Over My people and My inheritance, Israel, whom they scattered among the nations, and over My land, which they divided up between them. Egypt will be a waste and Edom a bare desert for the innocent blood spilled in their ground. Judah stands. Jerusalem stands. The blood does not get written off.

The Same Split, Later

Arise and shine, because your light has come.

Darkness will cover the earth in that hour and thick cloud will cover the peoples, and He will shine on one people standing in the middle of it. The pillar at the sea is the first draft of that arrangement, not a figure of speech about it. One mass of weather, two deliveries, chosen in public where an army could see it and do nothing.

Egypt watched and could not reach. Israel ate in the light and could not stop shaking. Between them hung a single cloud being two weathers at once until the water came down.

(Exodus 14:20) "And it (the cloud) came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel, and it was cloud and darkness", cloud for Israel and darkness for Egypt; Israel in the light, and Egypt in the dark, as in (Ibid. 10:23) "One man did not see another, and no man rose from his place for three days." And thus do you find in time to come, viz. (Isaiah 60:1) "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the L–rd has shone upon you." Why? (Ibid. 2) "For, behold, the darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds, the peoples, and upon you the L–rd will shine, and His honor will be seen upon you." And, what is more, he who is enveloped in darkness will see him who is enveloped in light. For the Egyptians, steeped in darkness, saw Israel in the light, eating, drinking and rejoicing. And they shot arrows and projectiles upon them, and the cloud and the angel protected them. And it is written (II Samuel 22:3) "My Shield, the horn of my salvation, my fortress and my refuge, my savior. You will save me from violence." And it is written (Ibid. 31) "He is a Shield to all who take shelter in Him."

Thus did the Holy One Blessed be He impress upon the nations of the world His love of Israel. He Himself walking before them, so that they (learn to) treat them honorably. And let alone that they do not do so, but they kill them with all kinds of sore, strange deaths, one unlike the other. Of this it is written (Joel 4:2) "And I will gather all the nations and I will bring them down to the valley of Yehoshafat, and I will contend with them there over My people and My inheritance, Israel, that they have scattered among the nations, and over My land that they have divided." I might think that He will contend with them) over (their being guilty of) idolatry, illicit relations, and the spilling of blood. It is, therefore, written "over My people and My inheritance, Israel." And (Ibid. 19) "Egypt shall be a wasteland, and Edom, a desolate desert because of the sons of Judah, in whose land they have spilled innocent blood." At that time (Ibid. 10) "Judah will endure forever, and Jerusalem, from generation to generation," and (Ibid. 21) "And absolve them of their blood, I will not absolve them." When? When the L–rd dwells in Zion. (Exodus 13:22)

Also Jerusalem, in time to come, every morning her judgment will come to light, viz. (Tzefaniah 3:5) "The L–rd is righteous in its midst. He will do no wrong. Every morning He will bring His judgment to light. It will not fail. But the churl will not know shame." (Exodus 14:24) "And it was in the morning watch": This occurred at dawn. "and the L–rd looked to the camp of Egypt with a pillar of fire and cloud, etc.":
